Services provided through the Independent Public Charter School Special Education Capacity Building Initiative will be free for all 2r/2x Independent Public Charter Schools. The purpose of this initiative is to help ensure the provision of a free and appropriate public education to students with disabilities in Wisconsin’s charter schools, enhance the quality of special education services, and ultimately improve academic and behavioral outcomes for those students. To achieve this, the initiative will support schools in meeting legal and regulatory requirements under Part B of IDEA as well as federal fiscal accountability requirements. The initiative will accomplish this by providing free support services to all charter schools on the following four topic areas:
- Special education legal and regulatory compliance
- Special education instructional programming, with a focus on literacy
- Data collection and reporting
- Fiscal management
In support of continuous improvement, these services will be delivered to school personnel through a variety of means, including in-person and blended professional development, on-site consultation sessions, and web-based technical assistance. DPI will also provide additional special education supports for independent public charter schools in the planning phase and in the event of a school closing. (Indicators 1-20)
